JSE-listed Allied Electronics subsidiary Powertech Transformers on Thursday announced that it has re-entered the arc furnace market, re-establishing its position as the only South African manufacturer designing, building and testing arc furnace transformers locally.

Powertech stated that a R42-million manufacturing mandate from Tronox Mineral Sands to produce two arc furnace transformers of 60 MVA, 33 kV and 33 kA for its Namakwa Sands operation, in the Western Cape, had enabled the company to take this step.

“Powertech is a proudly South African innovator, firmly in support of the National Development Plan’s initiative to grow the manufacturing base within our own borders. This project also represents an important milestone in our endeavours to capture new markets.

“We are proud to be contributing significantly, not only to job creation, but also in ensuring the continuance of local innovation through the South African manufacture of market-relevant technology and products,” Powertech CEO Bernard Meyer said.
