On Thursday 20 October the Sassda Columbus Steel Awards Gala took place at The Indaba Hotel.

This year saw a record 144 entries, up from 43 in 2014. Hydra Arc was proud to be an award finalist for its entry “Design & manufacture of municipal water storage tanks in 3CR12 instead of concrete”.

This water storage solution has changed the lives of communities and serves as a beacon of hope for so many people. The project entailed design, fabrication, transport and installation of a number of water tanks in densely populated ‘water scarce’ rural areas. The water tanks were manufactured at its Sky Hill Heavy Engineering facility in Secunda. The state-of-the art facility has 75,000m2 workshops under roof consisting of machinery and equipment unique to Africa. Learners and qualified artisans from its adjacent Mshiniwami Artisan Academy manned the project.

Hydra Arc’s Sky Hill Heavy Engineering was joint runner-up in the Ferritic Stainless Steel category. Ewan Huisamen (center), the Engineering Manager, represented Hydra Arc at the gala event. Pictured here with Charles Cammell (left) & John Tarboton (right)
