The Northern Cape provincial government will invest R500-million in measures to help improve service delivery in the Sol Plaatje municipality.

The municipality is said to be facing technical capacity challenges, resulting in the lack of service delivery.

The provincial government will provide R215-million for urgent maintenance work to fix potholes, as well as sewer and water leakages.

A further R71-million will be spent on providing temporary housing for residents affected by recent floods.

The provincial government has also put in place an implementation task team (ITT), comprising engineers from the departments of Human Settlements; Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs; and Roads and Public Works, as well as the Sol Plaatje and Frances Baard municipalities.

The ITT will also include senior officials from the provincial treasury.

Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul says the intervention demonstrates the provincial government’s commitment to addressing the social and service delivery challenges faced by communities.
