NO FLASH IN THE PAN

One year from now, the Khomani-San, whose hunter-gatherer way of life still survives in some parts of South Africa and the region, will witness yet another in a long series of new phenomena in a territory they have known intimately for thousands of years: a land-speed record attempt. A British team will seek to better the current 1 277.98 km/h record on Hakskeen Pan, in the Kalahari, using a specially built supersonic car, known as the Bloodhound. (See also cover story on page 18)
