The JSE has appointed Phuthuma Nhleko as an independent nonexecutive director, effective July 1.

He will serve as a member of the JSE’s group remuneration committee, group nominations committee and group deal committee.

Holding a BSc in civil engineering and an MBA, he has extensive experience, both in South Africa and globally, in telecommunications, organisational strategy development, operations, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and executive leadership.

Nhleko is the former CE and executive chairperson of MTN Group, having led that company from 2002 to 2019.

Prior to that, he worked as a corporate finance executive at Standard Corporate & Merchant Bank, as well as served as nonexecutive director on the boards of several public listed companies, including Nedbank, Anglo American and BP.

Nhleko currently leads the Phembani Group, which he founded in 2012, and chairs the Phembani Remgro Infrastructure Fund, which has interests in petroleum, energy, cement and the resources industry.
