South African new-vehicle sales continued their steady downward trend in August.
Total sales for August declined by 5.1%, to 45 537 units, compared with the same month last year.
It is clear that government is cutting back on its spending, with 1.9% of new-vehicle sales going to State institutions, compared with 2.9% a year ago, and 2.6% two years ago.
New passenger car sales exercised a big drag on the market in August, dropping by 7.6%, to reach 29 075 units.
The car rental industry accounted for 18% of new-car sales in August.
Sales of new bakkies, minibuses and vans, at 14 041 units, gained a modest 0.5%.
Sales of medium trucks, at 740 units, increased by 6.6%.
Sales of new heavy trucks and buses dropped by 9.5%, to 1 681 units.
August export sales, at 44 566 vehicles, represented a new monthly record for the South African automotive industry, increasing by 37.8%, to 44 566 units.
The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa says vehicle exports for the year to date are now 48 753 vehicles, or 22.9%, higher than the corresponding period last year and on track to achieve a new yearly record.
“Consumers and businesses remain under financial pressure and the new-vehicle market is feeling the pressure of reduced spending power with regards to vehicle purchases,” states the association.
