New power distribution units introduced to Africa

8th February 2013

International network infrastructure provider Siemon has introduced a new range of intelligent power distribution units (PDUs) to Africa.

With the ability to distribute power to criti- cal network equipment while providing real-time monitoring, the new PDUs reduce power consumption and increase the uptime of data centres.

The units are available with varying degrees of monitoring and control to meet specific client needs and preferences.

These include metered, monitored, smart, switched and fully managed PDUs, with capabilities ranging from simple-device- level monitoring to full outlet-level monitoring, control and switching.

Siemon says the new PDUs have robust, data-centre-quality construction and offer reliability, with powerful built-in capabilities to support various sensors that monitor critical cabinet parameters, such as temperature, airflow and humidity.

The units can be used as standalone units, which can be easily accessed by an intuitive Web browser, or can interface with third-party software using common open networking protocols.

The easy-to-read liquid crystal display on each networked PDU can be fully customised using a Web browser for local cabinet-level viewing.

“With data centre energy and downtime costs at an all-time high, the ability of intelligent PDUs to monitor and control power is vital for optimising efficiency and identifying potential problems.

“Data centre managers can easily view the status and track ongoing performance of PDUs and their devices to fully understand power consumption,” says Siemon data centre solutions and services manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa Alberto Zucchinali.

With this essential information, he says, data centre managers can identify high or erratic power consumption, insufficient cooling areas and underused equipment.

“This allows them to make informed deci- sions and take the proper steps to reduce power consumption and rapidly resolve problems in order to safeguard uptime,” he says.

The PDUs

are available with International Electrotechnical Commission or National Electrical Manufacturers Association plug interfaces, as well as for single or three-phase voltage.
