New building technology designed to reduce noise pollution

Interior building solutions group Saint-Gobain Gyproc has launched its Gyproc SoundBloc plasterboard walling system, which is designed for high-impact resistance and the reduction of noise pollution.

“The walling system is made from SoundBloc plasterboard that has sound insulating properties.

“Effective sound insulation is a necessity, as peace and quiet is essential to relaxation, concentration and healing,” says Saint-Gobain sector manager for housing, education and health Senamile Mazibuko.

Saint-Gobain says the Gyproc SoundBloc is a new building system that structures plasterboard according to client specifications and requirements.

It encompasses a range of stud options to match performance requirements, such as acoustic stud for acoustic performance. It achieves high levels of sound insulation of up to Weighted Reduction Index 81 dB.

Further, the product’s fire resistance is tested in accordance with SANS 10177: Part 2 and its acoustic ratings in accordance with SANS ISO 140-3: 1995.

Saint-Gobain adds that the sound impact of this walling system has also been tested and approved by the South African Bureau of Standards and it has been recommended as a new building technology – an alternative to the traditional brick and mortar. Gyproc SoundBloc is already used successfully in healthcare and education building projects in India and Europe.


“Because of the design flexibility of the walling system, it can be tailored to meet the requirements of a range of applications.

“The most obvious application is in the building of hospitals and schools, where noise pollution affects recovery and concentration,” she says.


“Saint-Gobain Gyproc has developed a range of walling and ceiling systems for the residential and commercial con- struction sectors over the last 80 years. The company says it often deploys its technological knowledge in partnership with universities and laboratories.

Saint-Gobain Gyproc has a construction products academy that is approved by the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority.

“There are three training centres, in Durban, Cape Town and in Samrand, Gauteng, where the Saint-Gobain Gyproc Academy runs learnerships of between 6 and 12 months.

“The learnership offers an integrated opportunity for an individual to gain an education and work experience in basic steel-frame drywall and ceiling installation at National Qualifications Framework levels 2 and 3,” adds Mazibuko.

Saint-Gobain Gyproc has employed several graduates from the academy as full-time employees within the organisation. The opportunity will provide further experience, which will enable them to eventually become self-employed contractors.
