Muswellbrook pumped hydroenergy storage project, Australia

Name of the Project
Muswellbrook pumped hydroenergy storage project.

Location
Muswellbrook Coal mine site in New South Wales, Australia.

Project Owner/s
Muswellbrook Pumped Hydro, a joint venture between AGL and Idemitsu Australia.

Project Description
The project is expected to generate a minimum of 250 MW of hydroelectricity, with eight hours of storage capacity, for a total of 2 000 MWh of stored energy.

Water will be pumped from a lower reservoir created within a rehabilitated mine void across 2 km to the top of nearby Bells mountain, where it will be stored in a 1.9 Gℓ reservoir that will be created on the top of the mountain. Water will then flow using gravity through pipes to drive a turbine at the base of the mountain and generate electricity, facilitating the decarbonisation of the electricity grid and the growth of renewable generation.
