MTN Hosts First Ever Global Y’ello Career Day For Youth On The Future Of Work

18th June 2018

MTN will host a Global Y’ello Career Day across 21 of its operations on Thursday, 21 June 2018. This is a first in the company’s history. The Y’ello Career Day is part of the 21 Days of Y’ello Care programme, which kicked off on 1 June 2018 across MTN’s 24-country footprint.

Felleng Sekha, Group Chief Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Officer, MTN, said: “MTN Y’ello Career day forms part of our efforts to support the empowerment of young people in the markets in which we operate. As an organisation committed to digital innovation, we are acutely aware of the way in which technological advancements has influenced traditional notions of the workplace and created new opportunities in the digital economy. We want to create a platform for young people to see what the future of work may look like and empower them with tools, ideas and access to mentors who can prepare them for the future”.

A first in the history of Y’ello Care, all MTN operations are implementing the same programme, with the same intended objectives on the same day.  MTN South Africa’s Y’ello Career Day event will give young people an opportunity to visit exhibition stands that showcase the company’s various resources and partnerships, including MTN digital technology network, HR Learning and Development, and Marketing.

Craig Wing, a partner at FutureWorld International and an acclaimed futurist speaker, will address the youth on ‘future proofing’ their careers, to help them envisage and create their future in the emergent world of technology and the ‘New World of Work’. The Y’ello Career Day ends a successful three weeks of staff volunteerism across the MTN footprint, with a mission to bridge the digital divide and upskill the future workforce, future employers and leaders in the regions where MTN has a presence.

About MTN’s Y’ello Care programme

With a focus on youth empowerment, MTN’s Y’ello Care programme and the company’s other CSI initiatives aim to use technology to ensure that young people are afforded the opportunity to obtain the necessary skills, education and support to fully benefit from the opportunities that may exist in the sector but that are often out of their reach due to lack of access to information.

For three weeks (from 1 to 21 June 2018), MTN Y’ello Care project teams have partnered with various technology partners in-country, academics, local government and thought leaders to provide insights and tools young entrepreneurs and learners will need to forge their paths into a BRIGHTER future.

Each of MTN’s operating offices in-country chose specific initiatives to implement in their markets under the Y’ello Care programme, to ensure local needs and dynamics are taken into consideration.

MTN Nigeria’s activities have included training for youth on ICT in partnership with Google, a Masterclasses in Music, Acting, Fashion, CV writing and motivational talks on career choices. MTN operations in the Middle East region continued with their Y’ello Care projects during the month of Ramadan.

MTN employees from Afghanistan set up a capacity building centre and provided brand ambassador training to female youth in Hadia, while MTN Syria employees held Ramadhan Iftar for more than 300 orphans in Damascus. Other activities across the MTN footprint have included recycling plastic bottles and manufacturing briquettes, the establishment of Y’ello Digital Rooms, building capacity centres and ICT training.
