JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) has stopped operations on one level at South African gold major AngloGold Ashanti’s Mponeng mine, near Carletonville, after a worker was fatally injured.

The locomotive operator was killed when a locomotive struck him. AngloGold Ashanti indicated that the DMR had been informed and an in-loco inspection had been conducted.

“AngloGold Ashanti would like to express its sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.  Management is working with the employees’ families to assist them through this difficult time,” the company said in a statement.
