MANAGEMENT COMPLIANCE Pandae’s GreenSolution assists companies in complying with the new waste disposal laws and government regulations
Since the local launch of its GreenSolution – an innovative waste management solution – in April/May 2014, specific commercial and industrial solutions specialist Pandae has established more than 65 waste management sites at automotive and logistics companies across South Africa.
“Pandae aims to implement the GreenSolution at more than 100 sites and employ close to 200 employees by the end of the year,” says Pandae CEO Ryk Coetzee, pointing out that the company is managing waste sites in Durban, Bloemfontein and Gauteng, but aims to establish 500 waste management sites in the country in the next four years.
He tells Engineering News that during the design phase of workshop equipment for automotive manufacturer Mercedes-Benz South Africa in 2013, the company requested Pandae to design waste areas for small, medium-sized and large dealerships.
Through the development of a prototype test site, Pandae established a scientifically based and industry-tested process that would significantly improve the environmental impact of the company’s operations in a cost-effective way. This includes adhering to South Africa’s environmental and waste management legislation, explains Coetzee.
“Pandae’s GreenSolution is designed to assist any company, regardless of the sector in which it operates, in effectively managing its waste management and recycling requirements in a sustainable manner while generating the relevant reports to fulfil the company’s legal obligation,” he emphasises.
Management Strategy
As part of Pandae’s services offering, the com- pany’s GreenSolution experts assess a company’s waste stream and develop an appropriate, customised waste diversion programme.
This comprises the design and construction of waste stations, trained personnel to sort the waste, management of the waste collection certification and payments, which is transferred to the client company, as well as the provision of an audit trail of the managed waste.
Coetzee explains that, once a waste collection station is designed, Pandae supplies on-site waste management equipment – such as waste stands, mini steel skips, sorting tables, coloured wheelie bins and waste sheds – on a rental basis.
Trained Pandae personnel are also stationed on site to collect and sort all waste into various categories, which are then collected and disposed of by approved recycling and waste removal companies.
As a recycled waste management programme, GreenSolution aims to reduce companies’ landfill waste, ensure cost savings and generate additional audited income from general waste. “Pandae is also able to provide a substantial number of much-needed jobs for general workers and supervisors in South Africa through the GreenSolution offering,” adds Coetzee.
As part of Pandae’s service-level agreement, GreenSolution experts compile an auditable monthly management report detailing the volumes of waste collected from all businesses. The waste results are recorded on the South African Waste Information System (Sawis) website, thereby ensuring that the client company adheres fully to the specified regulations of the National Waste Information Regulations, which became effective on January 1, 2013.
Coetzee says GreenSolution has been approved by a number of manufacturers and various motor dealerships for use in their operations.
He attributes the solution’s particular success in the automotive industry to Pandae’s understanding of this industry and the substantial rebates that can be received from the industry’s recycled materials, which predominately includes used oil, steel and aluminium, and to a lesser degree cardboard and paper.
