Mid West blue hydrogen and carbon capture and storage project, Australia

Name of the Project
Mid West blue hydrogen and CCS project.

Location
Perth, Australia.

Project Owner/s
The project is a joint venture (JV) between APA Group (infrastructure), Warrego Energy (natural gas supply) and Pilot Energy (carbon management). The JV will participate in and jointly fund the feasibility study on the proposed project.

Project Description
The objective of the feasibility study is to assess the carbon capture, storage (CCS) and use potential of the Cliff Head oil project and additional reservoirs across the broader Perth basin, the production of blue hydrogen and commercialisation through the provision of carbon dioxide (CO2) management services, and the sale of hydrogen.

A previously completed prefeasibility screening of the CCS potential of the Cliff Head oilfield determined that it could provide carbon geosequestration of about 500 000 t/y of CO2 for 13 years at an injection cost of about $16/t of CO2 using the existing Cliff Head oilfield onshore and offshore infrastructure, and be fully operational by 2025.

Key outcomes of the study will include the detailed description and assessment of development projects, the levelised cost of hydrogen and CO2 management services.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
The forecast cost of the study is about A$900 000.

Planned Start/End Date
The feasibility study will be conducted over a six-month period and is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2022.

Latest Developments
None stated.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Genesis (project management of feasibility study and overall study report); Technip Energies (assessment of blue hydrogen production technologies and hydrogen markets); and RISC Advisory (assessment of the infrastructure and CCS reservoirs at Cliff Head and other reservoirs across the Perth basin associated with the proposed carbon management services and CCS activities).
