As United Nations secretary-general António Guterres put it when delivering the 18th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture on July 18: “Covid-19 has been likened to an X-ray, revealing fractures in the fragile skeleton of the societies we have built.” Recovering from this pandemic and setting society on a more sustainable course will be this generation’s most pressing task.
