JRA advises of partial lane closures on the M2

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has advised that it has implemented partial lane closures on the M2 motorway from the Maritzburg Interchange to the Crown Interchange for repair works.

In keeping with the long-term rehabilitation of the M2, the agency has identified 30 “finger joints” to be replaced along the stretch of road from Maritzburg to the Crown Interchange.

The partial lane closures between 09:00 and 16:00 will leave two lanes open to traffic at any time during that period. Between 21:00 and 04:00, the closure of lanes is limited to two lanes, leaving only one lane open to traffic during these times.

The works should be completed within the next six months and the JRA assures motorists that it aims to limit the impact on them as far as possible.

REROUTE GUIDANCE

The M2 East and West main carriageways will remain open to traffic (albeit with restrictions), throughout the six-month duration of the rehabilitation works.

Several ramps will be periodically inaccessible and traffic diversions have been provided for such scenarios.

The ramps are Rissik street off-ramp from the M2 East, the Maritzburg street on-ramp to the M2 West, the Maritzburg street off-ramp from the M2 East and the Stott street on-ramp to the M2 West.

The Rissik street off-ramp from the M2 East will be inaccessible for six to eight weeks and, consequently, the M2 eastbound will not be accessible to traffic from the M1 southbound during that period.

This traffic will be diverted onto village road to bypass the Rissik off-ramp. Diverted motorists will be able to re-join the highway after Simmonds street courtesy of the M2 East over the Loveday on-ramp.

The Maritzburg street on-ramp will be inaccessible to traffic for four to six weeks.

During that period, traffic from Maritzburg street looking to access the M2 westbound carriageway should keep left onto the M2 East on-ramp, proceed along the M2 East for 500 m, keep left and exit at the Vickers road off-ramp, turn right at the northern terminal and, at the next right at the southern terminal, proceed onto the M2 West.

The total length of diversion will be 3.3 km.
