Industrial group wins contract for 500 elevators and escalators

ESCALATOR INSTALLATIONS Thyssenkrupp will be installing new elevators and escalators throughout Doha’s upcoming metro network

Diversified industrial group thyssenKrupp has been awarded a contract to manufacture, supply, install and maintain more than 500 elevators and escalators for the red line north, green line and two additional major stations of Qatar’s capital city Doha’s upcoming metro network, which will be completed in 2019.

The metro network will consist of four lines: the red, green, gold and blue lines, with plans for over 100 stations across a total length of more than 200 km. The network will link major locations within the city, including Hamad International Airport, Lusail, West Bay and Education City.

Besides the Doha Metro, the Qatar integrated rail project also includes plans for a light rail transit (LRT) system, in Lusail, and long-distance freight and high-speed passenger rail lines, as part of the Gulf Cooperation Council-wide rail network.

Advocating diversity as a crucial component of success for global technology companies, thyssenKrupp Elevator AG chief human resources officer Gabriele Sons recently urged 50 executives from its Asia Pacific region to consistently incorporate diversity and inclusion in their business operations.

At a workshop titled ‘Let us shine’, global best-practice examples from leading companies were discussed to showcase the advantages of intercultural collaboration.

“It is well proven that diverse teams perform better, and since we want to be the best in the market, thyssenKrupp is committed to a corporate policy that values and encourages diversity,” said Sons.

She explains that a commitment to diversity and inclusion is more than just a nice to-have principle to abide by when other imperatives have been satisfied, it is rather a vital pillar of thyssenKrupp’s corporate strategy and an important building block for its long-term success.

Diversity is already a big part of the corporate fabric at thyssenKrupp; customers in 150 countries profit from a close-knit network of more than 50 000 employees, comprising more than 100 nationalities across 900 local branches.

The company’s global network of experts also contributes significantly to research and development projects, working across countries, sectors, cultures, genders and age groups to deliver solutions for challenges of the future. The common objective is making cities of tomorrow the best places to live.

“Different points of view push us to challenge ourselves, adapt to new ideas and ways of doing things, and thereby help to drive innovation. As a company that is aiming to transform the elevator industry through game-changing technological innovations, diversity is an invaluable factor in determining how we structure our organisation,” she adds.

thyssenKrupp’s predictive maintenance and service solution, called MAX, demonstrates the success of this approach as it was developed transnationally by European, Asian and American teams, thereby taking global needs and demands into consideration from the very beginning and at every step of the development process.

Demonstrating what it means to lead diversity from the top, one of its corporate goals is to increase the share of women in leadership positions globally. While 8.8% of management positions were held by women in 2014, today there are 10.2%, with the target set for 15% by 2020.

In order to achieve this, thyssenKrupp employs a mix of measures, including the reconciliation of family and working life, and with the ‘We help’ programme launched in September last year, which also encourages the integration of refugees, about 400 internship and training positions will be provided in the next two years, of which the first 100 have been filled already.

Diversity and inclusion management is, therefore, an integral cornerstone of thyssenKrupp’s human resources policy, mission statement and principles for management.

thyssenKrupp won international magazine Elevator World’s Project of the Year 2016 in the escalators category last month, for its installations at Rome Metro’s new Line C, in Italy. The 141 installations completed by the company include 53 elevators and 88 escalators.

The company’s solutions are present at all 30 stations of Line C, providing comfortable and safe mobility for 50 000 passengers each day. For this important project, two flagship products, Tugela escalators and Latitude elevators, were selected from a range of solutions.

Both transport systems provide high-quality service, innovation, reliability and durability in all weather conditions, with the highest standards of safety. The project required the deployment of more than 370 t of material across 21 construction sites, and involved around 50 000 working hours over a five-year period.
