MAGALDI ASH COOLER A unique system for handling bottom ash from pulverised coal-fired boilers
Increasing pressure on manufacturers in South Africa to reduce their environmental impact has seen a strong demand for mining and bulk handling equipment supplier Tenova Takraf Africa’s air pollution control technology from the power generation industry.
The company will thus be displaying a wide range of equipment technology that cleans the air over the entire power generation process chain at this year’s Power-Gen Africa.
Tenova Takraf Africa has the necessary licences to supply solutions from bulk handling equipment manufacturer Ibau Hamburg, low-velocity dense phase advanced pneumatic materials handling equipment specialist Mactenn and bulk materials handling solutions provider Redler in Southern Africa. Tenova Takraf Africa offers various technologies and systems from these suppliers for managing the waste materials collected in the filters and precipitators, either pneumatically or mechanically.
The company has demonstrated its expertise in this field through its involvement in a boiler emission abatement (BEA) plant project for platinum miner Impala Platinum at its refinery in Springs, Gauteng. Tenova Takraf Africa is currently working on producing an integrated plant with the capability to efficiently and effectively remove pollutants, such as fly ash particulate, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, from the boiler flue gas. It will also improve the existing boiler heat recovery and boiler feed water systems, as well as produce only a minimal amount of waste residual, reducing the environmental impacts from waste handling or disposal.
The project is the first of its kind in Africa, and in line with the drive to align South Africa’s environmental regulations with global standards. This endeavour involves the national air quality regulations calling for a significant reduction in the industrial emissions of not only particulate matter, but also noxious fumes.
Apart from offering air environmental solutions, Tenova Takraf Africa will be showcasing a wide range of other technology with applications in the power generation industry. The company’s solutions cover the entire power generation process, with advanced technological solutions available for applications from coal extraction to ash disposal.

Tenova Takraf Africa will be showcasing the Magaldi Superbelt, developed by Italian environment-friendly hot bulk materials handling solutions provider Magaldi Italy at Power-Gen Africa. The Magaldi Superbelt is a steel mesh conveyor belt that is able to withstand higher temperatures than competitor technologies and is especially suited to applications in foundries, steel plants, mineral processing and power plants.
The technology is applied in different configurations over a broad range of high-temperature materials handling applications, providing, in particular, a unique solution for the dry handling and cooling of boiler bottom ash.
In addition to being high-temperature and impact resistant, this environment-friendly technology offers numerous advantages, including low noise levels and power use and enclosed conveying to prevent dust emissions and spillage, as well as conveying up to 35° inclination. The technology offers long life as there is no relative movement between the belt and handled material.
The Magaldi Ash Cooler will also be exhibited at the event. This cooler not only cools the bottom ash without any water, but also increases boiler efficiency by ensuring that the maximum calorific value is extracted from the fuel prior to disposal of the ash.
In addition, Tenova Takraf Africa will enlighten exhibition goers on the company’s fully mobile, semimobile and stationary crushing plants, which are designed according to customers’ requirements. Equipment for sizing and cleaning of coal include granulators and Bradford Breakers, which have played an important role in the power generation and coal industries for many decades.
Consultants will be on hand at Power-Gen Africa to discuss the company’s comprehensive range of materials handling equipment, which also includes in-plant and overland conveyors, as well as rotary rail car tipplers, apron feeders, stackers and reclaimers. Tenova Takraf has, moreover, installed the largest number of rapid train loading systems in South Africa for loading materials onto rail transport, and also offers port handling equipment, including ship loaders and unloaders, which are in use all over the world.
