Improved design and efficiency tips balance toward HV motor replacement

3rd September 2019

Advances in technology now make it possible for old high voltage (HV) motors to be replaced with new, improved HV machines within a customer’s existing footprint and operational configuration.

Compared to HV machines designed 20 to 30 years ago, modern units can often be manufactured in smaller sizes than the original motors. While smaller in dimension compared to the original HV motors, the newer motors are able to deliver the required performance with the promise of even higher output and efficiencies. In addition, the modern units can be purpose-built to meet the precise needs of the customer.

Zest WEG Group, under the umbrella of parent company WEG, works with customers to optimise their HV motor operations. The company states that it has the design capability and applications knowledge to design a replacement motor to match the footprint of the original unit. This means that customers do not need to modify existing mechanical infrastructure or electrical design to accommodate an upgraded motor.

The company notes that with the design lifespan of electric motors ranging between 20 to 30 years, there are still many old units in operation across South Africa. It avers that technological improvements in motor design and efficiency mean that replacing old units is preferable to carrying out repeated repairs.

The company highlights that the cost of a major motor overhaul could be up to 60% of the cost of replacement. In addition, the new units have potential benefits, such as reliability and improved efficiency, which may lead to improved operational performance and savings in energy consumption.

An on-site inspection can provide a failure assessment and an energy consumption analysis, allowing the customer to make an informed decision about motor replacement.

Depending on a machine’s application, the group could recommend enhancements for greater control and efficiencies, including motor control options such as variable speed drives for applications such as fans and pumps.
