Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) acting chairperson Nomvuyiso Batyi and South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) CEO Dr Boni Mehlomakulu have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work towards ensuring that electronic equipment entering the South African market meets the required quality-performance standards.

As a result, nontelecommunications electronic equipment that fell under the mandate of Icasa would be subjected to robust conformity assessment procedures to ensure they met the quality requirements stipulated by the SABS.

The influx of low-quality products into the country and the risks they posed to consumers compelled the SABS and Icasa to review the process of issuing Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility certificates of compliance.

The Consumer Protection Act was aimed at ensuring consumers receive goods that complied with applicable standards set under the Standards Act.
