Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale launched South Africa’s first Chair for Education in Human Settle- ments Development and Management in March at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), in Port Elizabeth.

The four-year bachelor’s degree in human settlements is expected to contribute knowledge towards finding solutions to tackle the sector’s challenges.

It will ensure that graduates who enter the profession understand the issues and debates in the sector and are competent to implement poli- cies and solutions.

Sexwale said that the partnership is a tripartite one that includes the Department of Higher Education and Training, NMMU and the Department of Human Settlements.

The new degree will provide a scope for students to become professionals in the field and students will be able to enrol for this degree from 2014.
