Honda targets budget car market with new Brio

Honda South Africa will in December provide budget-conscious South Africans with yet another option in the entry-level new-car market, when the Brio arrives here from India.

The hatchback will add to an already strong line-up of budget cars made in India and shipped to South Africa, such as the Toyota Etios and the Ford Figo.

The first shipment of Brios left Mumbai for South Africa in October, and is scheduled to arrive in local showrooms in early December.

The consignment represents a milestone for Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL), as it marks the first export of Honda products from HCIL to SA.

“The export of Brios to the highly sophisticated South African market underscores the world-class quality of the cars we produce,” says HCIL president and CEO Hironori Kanayama.

The Brio will become Honda South Africa’s most affordable offering to date.

Despite its entry-level status, the Japanese manufacturer says the Brio “epitomises Honda’s focus on latest-generation technology, tactile quality and long-term durability”.

The hatchback’s 1.2-litre i-VTEC engine delivers 65 kW of power, together with 109 Nm of torque, and is offered with a choice of manual and automatic gearboxes.

The Honda Brio has been on sale in India since September 2011, and has sold more than 25 000 units, claiming a number of small car of the year awards.

At this stage, the exact standard specification levels and pricing of the new Honda Brio have yet to be confirmed, notes Honda South Africa.

Honda South Africa sold 652 vehicles locally in October, compared with 648 units in October last year.

Sales in October this year consisted of 34 Accords, 96 CR-Vs, 170 Jazz models, 186 Ballades, 1 CR-Z, 164 Civics and 1 Insight.

The Honda Jazz is currently the brand’s most affordable local model, starting at R159 900, as at November 8.
