Golomoti Solar project, Malawi

Name of the Project
Golomoti Solar project.

Location
Dedza, in Malawi.

Project Owner/s
InfraCo Africa, a subsidiary of the Private Infrastructure Development Group, and project partner JCM Power.

Project Description
The Golomoti Solar plant will facilitate the delivery of much-needed clean power to Malawi’s national grid.

The power plant will be the first commercial-scale solar photovoltaic plant in the country to include a battery energy storage system (BESS).

The project will involve the construction of a 20 MWac solar plant and will incorporate a state-of-the-art 5 MW/10 MWh lithium-ion BESS, which will enable the plant to provide reliable power and improve network stability, reducing reliance on hydro and diesel generation, while ensuring that grid stability is maintained. It is expected that performance data from the BESS will inform similar systems elsewhere in the region.

The plant will connect to the adjacent Golomoti substation, which will evacuate power through an 132 kV transmission line.
