power generation company Globeleq and renewable-energy independent power producer (IPP) Sturdee Energy Southern Africa have been awarded preferred bidder status for two 15 MW projects in the first tranche of eSwatini’s procurement programme for new renewable-generation capacity.

Globeleq says it welcomes the opportunity to support the eSwatini Energy Regulatory Authority strategy to increase domestic power generation and reduce reliance on imported power.

“As the first utility-scale renewable IPP in eSwatini, these projects will help stabilise the cost of electricity supply and increase the country’s energy resilience, acting as a strong driver for growth and playing a part in the economic recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic,” says Globeleq chief development officer Jonathan Hoffman.

The 15 MW Balekane and 15 MW Ngwenya projects will be connected to the national grid.
