Global steel output up 0.6% y/y in August

Global steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) increased by 0.6% year-on-year to 156.2-million tonnes in August.

Steel production in Africa, however, decreased by 11.2% year-on-year to 775 000 t, driven by a 24% year-on-year decrease in South Africa's output to 330 000 t. Libya's steel production also decreased by 3.7% year-on-year to 30 000 t, while Egypt's output increased by 1.7% year-on-year to 415 000 t.

China produced 94.8-million tonnes, an 8.4% year-on-year increase.

India's steel production decreased by 4.4% to 8.5-million tonnes, Japan's output by 20.6% to 6.4-million tonnes and South Korea's output by 1.8% to 5.8-million tonnes.

Worldsteel further reported that the US produced 5.6-million tonnes of steel in August, a 24.4% decrease.

Steel production in Brazil increased by 6.5% to 2.7-million tonnes.

Italy's production increased by 9.7% to 900 000 t, while Germany's output fell by 13.4% to 2.8-million tonnes, France's output by 31.2% to 700 000 t and Spain's output by 32.5% to 700 000 t.

Production in Turkey increased by 22.9% to 3.2-million tonnes.

Production in the Commonwealth of Independent States is estimated to have decreased by 6.2% year-on-year to 7.9-million tonnes, while output in Ukraine decreased by 5.7% year-on-year to 1.8-million tonnes.
