Gender does not define capability at Shumani

Well-known for its superior customer service, Shumani Industrial Equipment prides itself on the fact that it guarantees a 98% uptime and a maximum three-hour response time for its clients. The largest black-owned industrial and construction equipment supplier in South Africa, Shumani has technicians on-site at all of its major client operations.

Its maintenance department is overseen by Service Administration Manager Grany Letswalo, who ensures that all machines are serviced and load tested timeously. She leads a team of service controllers. “Each day is different and has its own challenges, but with the right mindset it has been a walk in the park,” says Grany, who has a Diploma in Financial Management and commenced her career as a Credit Controller.

She has been instrumental in putting procedures in place to ensure a more effective workflow. As a result, the company has grown in leaps and bounds since it was established six years ago by MD Victor Nemukula, who has been at the helm since its inception.

“I lead by example. I involve my team in everything; everyone knows what’s happening in the department. ‘It’s not my job’ doesn’t exist in my office, as together we achieve more. I also believe in my team and always encourage them to push harder,” says Grany.

She is adamant that her gender does not define her capabilities. “The industry doesn’t need to change for women; women must change for the industry. They must allow themselves to move out of the ‘norm’ and try out new career paths,” is her advice on the occasion of Women’s Day on 9 August.

Grany adds: “I am my own role model. I encourage myself and believe in myself, as this is my journey and my book to write.” Her message to women contemplating a similar career path is: “Go for it, as the sky is the limit. The only thing stopping you is yourself.”
