Fibre keeping up with demand

Installation of Vuma fibre infrastructure

Amid fears that higher volumes of streaming, downloading, e-learning and working from home could lead to slower Internet speeds, fibre-optic connection appears to be well-positioned to provide for the spike in demand for Internet connectivity.

Fibre infrastructure provider, Vuma, reports that Internet service providers in South Africa have noted an increase in demand in terms of the number of Internet users on networks. However, home fibre connections have been able to keep up with the demand and have continued to ensure high data speeds, asserts the company, adding that its network supports speeds of up to 1 Gb/s.

As a telecommunications service provider deemed an essential service by the South African government, the company was able to continue connecting residential customers to fibre-based Internet throughout the lockdown period and completed installations in a number of areas in Polokwane.

In addition, Vuma boosted line speeds for all its customers during the lockdown period to the end of June, in response to the high demand for fast Internet for those working from home amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The company moved customers’ line speeds up by one, which, for example, saw customers on a 10 Mb/s plan boosted to a 20 Mb/s line speed during the period.
