The South African economy did not perform well last year and the outlook for 2014 is only marginally better. To be sure, the economy is weighed down by both internal and external factors. However, it is also clear that much more emphasis needs to be given to clearing the domestic constraints to higher growth, particularly given our lack of control over the external headwinds. Probably easier said than done during an election year, though.
