Cooler reduces nitrogen oxide emissions from marine engines

Exhaust gas recirculation coolers manufactured from durable stainless steel are resistant to the effects of temperature and corrosion, according to heat exchangers solutions provider Kelvion.

There are two stainless steel cooler solutions available for four-stroke engines. High-temperature models are designed for exhaust gas temperatures of up to 700 °C. The low-temperature version of the coolers, with a downstream condensate drain, has been designed for a gas intake at a maximum of 200 °C.

To satisfy strict exhaust gas regulations, the exhaust of marine diesel engines must be after-treated. Alternatively, the engines must be designed for clean combustion from the very beginning.

This is done by implementing special design measures inside of the engines. One example of interior engine design measures is exhaust gas recirculation. This emission-reduction technique can be retrofitted and has proven successful for two- and four-stroke diesel engines.

Exhaust gas recirculation can reduce nitrogen oxide emission by up to 80%. This technique will only succeed if the exhaust gases are cooled before being mixed with the combustion air.
Exhaust-gas recirculation coolers from Kelvion transfer the heat effectively to sea water, or to treated fresh water.

For this purpose, these coolers feature finned-tube configurations and fin geometry that have been optimised for maximum efficiency by flow simulation, which minimises fouling and clogging on the gas-side cooling surface. The structures are especially embossed on the surfaces of the ribs that produce turbulence to enable the cooled gas to flow effectively through all areas of the heat exchanger. The result is enhanced heat transfer.

Kelvion also offers exhaust gas recirculation coolers for two-stroke diesel engines with medium- and high-performance ratings. With exhaust gas recirculation, these coolers lower nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 80% in two-stroke diesels.

Kelvion exhaust gas recirculation coolers for two-stroke engines are manufactured with extra corrosion protection, as the upstream prescrubber in the gas flow creates a greater corrosion risk in two-stroke diesel engines.
