Entries are now open for the seventh edition of the yearly Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa) Awards for Excellence.

The awards, aimed at celebrating excellence in the metals and engineering (M&E) industry, honour small and large manufacturers that promote innovation, transformation, skills development, a safe working environment, good business ethics and excellence.

The awards are open for members and non-members of Seifsa.

Seifsa CEO Kaizer Nyatsumba says the 2021 awards “come at a time when the M&E industry’s existing challenges have been compounded by the Covid-19 pandemic”. The challenges he referred to include weak growth, a lack of demand, rising operating costs and expensive and erratic power supply.

Despite these challenges, companies have continued to ensure the sustainability of their businesses and have protected their employees’ jobs, he adds, noting that it is for this reason that “companies deserve to be celebrated and encouraged to continue their efforts to revive [the] ailing industry”.

Entrants will be assessed on their performance from July 1, 2019, to December 31, 2020, in seven different categories.

These categories include the most innovative company, the health and safety award, the customer service award, the environmental stewardship award, as well as the artisan award.

The closing date for entries is May 4, with the winners of the awards to be honoured at a ceremony later that month.
