The family of energy industry veteran Dr Thabo Kgogo has advised of his passing from Covid-19 complications on July 30.

Most recently, he served as CEO of asset manager Gemcorp Energy’s refineries business, which has two refineries under construction in Liberia and Angola – Kgogo had been instrumental in developing these assets.

His career spans his petroleum engineer training at the University of Cape Town; doctoral degrees in petroleum engineering from Imperial College, in London; reservoir engineer at State-owned oil company PetroSA; and various leadership appointments, including as CEO of SacOil (now Efora Energy), nonexecutive director of Group Five and interim CEO of Group Five.

Efora Energy former CFO and Gemcorp Energy Refinery CFO Damain Matroos describes Kgogo’s death as a great loss, particularly since he made such a big impact on the challenging energy landscape in Africa.

PetroSA former VP Godwin Sweto says Kgogo’s passing is a wound that might never heal, bemoaning that he was still young with a successful future ahead of him.

“The world is left poorer without his skills,” remarks Tongaat Hulett executive director Dan Marokane.
