Generator distributor Cummins demonstrated its recently launched Virtual Reality training and marketing device at the Power & Electricity World Africa (PEWA) Exhibition last month. The Cummins exhibit showcased two sets of high-technology equipment for media and customers.

By wearing goggles and a headset, a person could experience a simulated three-dimensional tour of a plant or data centre, complete with sound to further enhance the experience of virtual reality.

“The viewer is introduced to various products in a data centre, including the recently launched QSK95 Series of high-horsepower generator sets.

The QSK95 is designed for critical applications that demand a robust, reliable source of power to ensure uninterrupted operations for applications in areas such as hospitals, sports stadiums, office buildings and data centres,” Cummins power generation director Kenny Gaynor said at the event.

He added that the device had been engineered for use in training and education, providing a new and dynamic teaching experience.

“Innovation is about unlocking and unleashing new ways of thinking, doing and delivering against a background of continuous improvement. The compact and portable headgear provides endless marketing opportunities for the broad range of products.”

He stated that Cummins recently launched its remote, cloud-based monitoring technology in South Africa – a key differentiator for the company.

“It provides support for equipment through the cloud, relieving pressure from the local source. The technology provides real-time data from a Cummins controller using a cellphone or email, alerting the customer by providing information that predicts future problems and power outages,” he noted.

He added that downtime or maintenance issues could be prevented or scheduled accordingly.

Typical applications for remote monitoring include maintenance, multi-building businesses that are controlled by one data centre, telecommunications, banking, hospitals and franchisee businesses.
