Corrosion coating applied to drive units

NOT TO BE IG‘NORD’ The in-house coating developed by Nord is applied to all its aluminium drives

Engineering components supplier Bearing Man Group’s (BMG’s) Nord aluminium drives range is available with the nsd tupH anti-corrosion treatment for improved process reliability in extreme environmental conditions and hygienically critical applications.

Manufactured and developed by electric motor manufacturer Nord Drivesystems Company, the nsd tupH is a surface and corrosion system which is resistant to acids and alkalis. It is also a highly efficient treatment for gear units, smooth motors, frequency inverters and motor starters in washdown-optimised cast aluminium housings.

The nsd tupH anti-corrosion treatment is a robust alternative to painted geared motors or stainless steel versions. The treatment – a catalytic surface treatment process – permanently bonds a high hardness layer to the aluminium substrate to offer the same corrosion resistance as stainless steel.

Nord drives coated with nsd tupH comply with the Food and Drug Administration Title 21 code of federal regulations 175.300, of the US. The nsd tupH-coated drives are suitable for food applications. The coated drives have been successfully tested according to active standard test method (ASTM) D714 for blistering and ASTM D610-08 for corrosion.

Further, standards include ASTM D1654-08 according to the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), European International Standards (EN) ISO 2409 for scratching, ASTM B117-09 according to DIN EN ISO 9227 in relation to salt spray tests, and ASTM D3170 pertaining to gravelometer testing. In addition, resistance to common cleaning agents, which are used in the food industry, has been confirmed during testing.

All DIN and standard components for BMG’s Nord nsd tupH-coated aluminium drive units, including drive shafts, are made from stainless steel. Additionally, fan-less smooth motors – which run quietly – do not spread germs. They are available as synchronous and asynchronous motors, with the former IE4 compliant and the latter IE2 and IE3 compliant.

Advantages include extended surface life, a substantially lower mass, improved installation options and cost efficiency.

“Nord’s nsd tupH anti-corrosion treatment is not a coating like a paint layer that can detach or flake off. The protective coating offers optimum protection against scratching, blistering and the penetration of corrosion, even if the unit is damaged. “This coating is highly resistant to extreme environments and aggressive cleaning chemicals, even under high pressure washdown conditions,” says BMG Nord Drivesystems, electromechanical drives division national product specialist Deon Crous.

He adds that the nsd tupH treatment allows for an easy-to-clean surface.

Typical applications for nsd tupH-treated drives include the food and beverage industry, bottling and canning plants, water treatment and sewage plants, as well as offshore and onshore applications. This range is suitable for use in any plant that requires a washdown after production.

Crous concludes that the Nord range, which is assembled locally by BMG, according to international quality and safety specifications, has earned recognition in the local market for reliability, high efficiency, reduced noise levels, extended service life and minimal maintenance requirements.
