Controls system for smart-enabled equipment

Controls systems manage, regulate and configure devices or systems. They are able to integrate a number of different controls or systems and can be used to manage single controllers, small commercial systems or large industrial controls systems.

A new controls system that integrates equipment and controls in the light commercial market, has been introduced in South Africa.

Suitable for single- or multi-zone applications, the system connects to a range of smart-enabled mechanical and electrical equipment, controls and sensors using wireless configurations.

Smart-enabled devices generally connect wirelessly to other devices or networks and can operate to some extent interactively and autonomously.

The Verasys system from Johnson Controls offers the capabilities and data to deliver end-to-end control technology to building owners, giving insight into building operations, with the aim of providing improved facilities to occupants.

Configurable controllers provide settings for implementation, with the option to change defaults to meet specific requirements. The system is able to offer a bundled solution of smart equipment and controls that work with third-party, package equipment, which aims to provide greater application and flexibility and protect existing investments.

In addition, the system communicates using BACnet MSTP and integrates with Metasys or any third-party BACnet system. Optional fault detection and diagnostics deliver alarm notifications via email or text, allowing equipment to be serviced when required.

For building operators, the system provides remote access over a secure Internet connection using personal computers, smartphones and tablets. The controls system connects users to data streams from smart controls in rooftop units, fan coils, zone dampers, heat pumps, refrigeration systems, lighting panels and more. Real-time data allows building operators to potentially identify and troubleshoot issues remotely and provide appropriate solutions. Graphics are also used to aid faster access to information.  

The company states that the system can be implemented without requiring any special programming tools, potentially lowering installation costs. Providing access to information using the controls system is aimed at improving energy efficiency, lowering operating costs and extending equipment life. The system also offers control flexibility, including scheduling, alarming and setpoints, aimed at saving time, increasing productivity and providing facilities that better serve occupants.
