South African construction group Concor has highlighted progress at its Green Star V2-rated Oxford Parks Block 2A Phase 1 project, in the Johannesburg suburb of Rosebank. Work started in February and the project is scheduled to take 17 months, with completion targeted for September next year.

“The initial phases, including bulk earthworks, were swiftly completed in early March, with the construction team moving forward with raft foundation work,” reported the company. “The proximity to the Gautrain servitude limits the use of piling, necessitating raft foundations that, while more time-consuming, will ensure the project’s stability and durability. Additionally, the initiation of construction during the rainy season posed a challenge due to the area’s adverse soil conditions.”

The project involves the construction of two buildings, which will share a common four-level basement. One building, at 10 Parks Boulevard, will have six storeys. The other, at 55 Eastwood road, will have four stories. Both buildings will have distinctive architectural features (including “round elements”) to improve both their aesthetics and functionality.

With this project, Concor is seeking to showcase its commitment to the use of green technologies and materials, and to the integration of eco-friendly and sustainable practices into its projects. The aim is to minimise environmental impact, and to set a new benchmark for the company in terms of these green building practices, exceeding even the high level previously achieved, within the Oxford Parks Precinct.

The company also expects that the project will again highlight its ability to carry out complex and fast-track projects, while remaining completely focused on safety, quality and sustainability. Further, it will act as a blueprint for future, environmentally responsible and innovative projects, as well as being an exemplar of construction excellence.

“Our collaborative approach with subcontractors, coupled with our team’s comprehensive skillset, sets Concor apart in the construction industry,” affirmed Concor contract manager Martin Muller. “Communication remains key on all our projects ensuring that all team members are aligned with the project’s objectives, especially in terms of quality and safety.”

The project, along with previous ones in the area, is also expected to contribute to the urban redevelopment and aesthetic enhancement of Rosebank.
