Cape Town Container Terminal achieves record refrigerated containers load

Transnet’s Cape Town Container Terminal has loaded a record 1 726 refrigerated containers on a single vessel, called the Santa Rita.

The vessel, carrying fruit, is destined for Europe.

The prior record was 1 711 refrigerated containers loaded onto a single vessel in 2021.

Transnet Port Terminals Western Cape acting manager Oscar Borchards says the achievement testifies to the entity’s ramp-up plans that are heading in the right direction.

“To handle both season requirements and ensure efficiency, the Cape Town Container Terminal had to develop a recovery plan,” he explains, adding that the terminal is receiving support across all spheres of the Transnet business.

The management team of the terminal has been working more closely with employees to offer support and ensuring that equipment, systems and people are all in sync.

The terminal has also been monitoring shift changes more closely, to ensure that plans are executed efficiently.

South Africa typically exports grapes, peaches, plums, apples and pears up until the end of March.

The Cape Town Container Terminal currently has three vessels on berth and two at anchor, with planned volumes of 16 115 twenty-foot equivalent units planned for loading this week.
