BURNING ISSUE

The sky turned orange in San Francisco, California, earlier this month as wildfires raged. California reported a total of 4 927 fires in 2019 and so far during 2020, during which summer temperatures have surged, there have been more than 7 606 blazes. There are also warnings that the risk of extreme fire events will increase as a result of climate change. Once the Covid-19 pandemic abates, climate change will again come to the fore as this generation’s most burning issue. Photograph: Stephen Lam for Reuters
