BLURRING HISTORY: Pope Benedict XVI, pictured here waving as he arrived to lead a weekly general audience last year in Saint Peter’s Square, shocked the world and altered history by announcing his intention to step down on February 28 – the first papal resignation in nearly 600 years. The Vatican’s 120-strong College of Cardinals will now have the responsibility of choosing a successor. The Vatican has indicated that a new pope should be elected before the end of March.
