BIG SCIENCE

Situated near the town of Carnarvon, in the Northern Cape, Antenna 47 (pictured above) lies within the outer limits of the greater 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope, inaugurated on July 13 by Deputy President David Mabuza and Science and Technology Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane. The MeerKAT is a component of the larger Square Kilometer Array, which is intended to be the most sensitive radio telescope on earth. The vast amounts of data from the 64 dishes, which can be as high as 275 gigabytes a second, are processed in real time.
