Bifacial tracking system for solar modules

23rd July 2019

A new tracking system has been optimised for bifacial modules, which are solar units designed to allow light to enter from both sides.

The reverse side of the module tables have been adjusted so that the units can be installed without creating shade from metal struts or similar structures.  Unlike most single-axis tracking systems, the new tracker does not require a central torque tube at the pivot point of the table. This allows greater flexibility for module arrangement and for bifacial modules in particular.

The key design of the original tracker has not been changed.  The system works with a patented mechanical self-locking system on each post, which locks automatically if the row is not moved. This helps to eliminate wind-induced vibrations, or the galloping effect, for the entire row. When in the resting position, the system functions like a fixed installation, suitable for wind speeds of up to 260 km/h.

The upper assembly group and drive unit is pre-assembled, allowing the system to be installed almost as quickly as a fixed installation.

According to the Schletter group, there is an increasing demand for bifacial modules and a growing drive to optimise yields for photovoltaic systems in the solar industry. The company’s mounting solutions include the integration of bifacial modules, new high-performance materials, smart-design solutions and system components to facilitate easy handling by resellers.

The Schletter Tracker is a new version of the company’s 2018 tracking system, optimised for bifacial modules.  It is currently in use with bifacial modules at a project in Bavaria.
