The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) this week opened applications for scholarships.

The deadline for applications is September 30.

The Sanral scholarships, aimed at providing a pipeline of high school learners who can, in future, provide the engineering skills needed by the roads agency and other organisations responsible for the national mandate of infrastructure development, are awarded to applicants on merit.

Over the past year, some 56% of the scholarship recipients were female and 65% were African.

Further, university students who want to apply for bursaries from Sanral have until November 30 to do so.

This year, 110 sponsored students are studying at various universities across the country through the comprehensive bursary, which pays for registration, tuition, accommodation, food and travel and living allowances.

The bursaries, which form part of Sanral’s contribution to address the skills gap in the country, support engineering students at eight South African universities.

All Sanral bursary students are offered vacation jobs to expose them to the work environment of the company while still studying.

The bursary scheme was initiated in 2007 to provide financial assistance to students. Students are selected according to academic performance in civil engineering and related studies in the built environment.
