Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Tertuis Simmers says empowerment and job opportunities will increase with the Airport Precinct housing development.

He was speaking during his visit to Gugulethu as part of the monitoring of the two housing development sites that form part of the Airport Precinct Infills Projects (APIP).

The project is the first phase of the Main Precinct informal settlement upgrading project.

The APIP is divided into five infill sites – Luyolo, Tambo Village, Gxagxa, New Rest and Lusaka – in Gugulethu. It involves the construction of internal and bulk engineering services, where 729 housing opportunities – 455 Breaking New Ground (BNG) units and 274 high-density units for qualifying and deserving beneficiaries – will be created.

The project, which has a budget allocation of R364-million, got under way in September 2020 and is expected to be completed by February 2025.

Simmers said more than 42 job opportunities had already been created.

“With the progress that is being made, there are various milestones that can be celebrated today. I am, however, happy to be informed that further job opportunities will be created during the construction of the top structures.

"It is anticipated that these opportunities will increase threefold once civil works commence at the Gxagxa and Lusaka sites and top structures start at Luyolo and Tambo,” he noted.
