JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) on Tuesday announced that the outcome of the ongoing consultation process relating to its proposed Section 189 restructuring would be postponed to May 6.

On March 28, Amplats, the Department of Mineral Resources, the National Union of Mineworkers, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and Uasa had initially agreed to extend their bilateral consultation process by 30 days to the end of April to allow sufficient time for the conclusion of the process.

However, the parties were still concluding the details of the consultation.

The stakeholders had been engaged in consultation for the past 90 days as agreed at a tripartite meeting on January 28.

At this meeting, it was resolved to postpone the continuation of Amplats’ proposed Section 189 process under the Labour Relations Act to allow for a detailed consultation process to take place.

This followed an announcement by Amplats in mid-January that it would undertake a restructuring programme that could see it cut 14 000 jobs.
