Brussels-based airline Air Belgium plans to operate seasonal flights to South Africa starting in September, with up to three flights each week to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The City of Cape Town and the Western Cape have welcomed Air Belgium’s plan to schedule two flights to Cape Town per week, with one direct and one triangular route from Brussels to Johannesburg and Cape Town starting later in September.

The Johannesburg and Cape Town routes are currently the airline’s only continental Africa flights.

Brussels has historically been Cape Town's second largest unserved market and the largest unserved European market based on two-way international passenger volumes.

Western Cape Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities David Maynier has welcomed the announcement.
