Witbank-based mining optimisation company Advanced Aerial specialises in providing processed aerial data to the coal mining and industrial sector.
With the convergence of exponential technology, drones are starting to play a more significant role in actionable mine information and can currently provide the following services:
- Blasting optimisation – including the six key components;
- Surveying of pits, highwalls and stockpiles;
- Mapping;
- Surveys;
- Volume calculations;
- Three-dimensional modelling;
- Accident scenes;
- Traffic management plans;
- Pit inspections;
- Spontaneous combustion surveys;
- Time-lapse studies;
- Structural inspections;
- Induction and introduction filming;
- Electrical inspections;
- Blast observation and analytics;
- Perimeter safety; and
- Security support – night flying, surveillance and on-ground tactical support.
As part of the United Drones Holding (UDH) group, Advanced Aerial’s pilots are contracted to Drone Ops for flight operations and will soon be able to conduct beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations, which are greater than a 1 km range. Pilot training has been facilitated through RPAS Training Academy, currently the only training organisation in South Africa authorised to offer certified BVLOS training, which is also a UDH group company.
The dawn of BVLOS brings huge opportunity to the mining and industrial industry with significant safety, cost-saving and efficiency victories. This is even more pertinent when considering night-time security operations.
