Stellenbosch University (SU) has highlighted the role of its Electronics Systems Laboratory (ESL) in the groundbreaking Africa2Moon space mission, which would form part of China’s Chang’e-8 robotic lunar probe, set to launch in 2029. The South African-led Africa2Moon was the first all-African space exploration mission, and was selected by the Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA) as one of the 11 international payloads to be carried by Chang’e-8, which will land in the lunar South Polar region and deploy a rover and a robot. Lead institution for Africa2Moon was the Foundation for Space Development in Africa, in a collaboration with the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), the South African National Space Agency, SU, Rhodes University, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South African companies active in the space sector, and other organisations and institutions. The aim was to deploy a radio telescope technology demonstrator on the far side of the Moon.

This is a joint endeavour between UCT, the University of the Western Cape and the University of Pretoria and is hosted by UCT. The IDIA was created to meet the problem of processing, analysing, interpreting and visualising the huge amounts of data that would be produced by the next generation of radio telescope arrays. South Africa’s own world-leading MeerKAT, which became fully operational in 2018, is the most notable of these. And now the South Africa-based mid-radio frequency array of the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope will soon also start operations.

South Africa’s education system has no shortage of policy ambition. It has strategies, data systems, institutional mandates, and a growing national agenda for digital transformation. Much of the system, however, is still fragmented, writes Mark Burke in this latest opinion article. Learner records sit in different databases. Schools, colleges, universities, funding agencies, and qualification authorities collect overlapping information through separate processes. Provinces work with uneven capacity and uneven systems. Some digital tools are improving, but mostly within institutional silos. That is the setting in which Digital Public Infrastructure, or DPI, becomes relevant. The question is whether South Africa can use the current push for digital identity, data exchange, and digital payments to make education services more coherent from school entry to post-school transitions and into work.

South Africa said it’s evacuating researchers at a sub-Antarctic Marion Island base after the Iran war delayed fuel deliveries needed for the operations. The “urgent evacuation of the overwintering team” was ordered after the SA Agulhas II, an icebreaking polar-supply ship, got held up in Cape Town for weeks waiting for the fuel, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, said in a statement. The station requires polar diesel that doesn’t freeze in extreme cold. South Africa blamed the Iran war for the disruption in an earlier statement. The most industrialised nation on the continent has replaced some of the oil products that it imports from the Middle East with US supplies, but the switch has still resulted in disruptions that reverberate as far as the remote base. The SA Agulhas II departed on Thursday to pick up the team and is expected to arrive on May 18. Marion Island is one of three South African bases located in remote areas.

FLUXNET Shuttle collects flux data from regional networks around the world, in real time, and makes this data available to researchers around the globe. “Flux data is the direct measurement of the exchange of carbon, water, and energy between land and atmosphere from tropical forests to Arctic tundra,” explained the NRF. “It measures turbulent, vertical, and horizontal air movements (“eddies”) to understand how ecosystems such as forests, farms, or water bodies interact with the air, acting as sources or sinks for greenhouse gases.”
