The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Observatory (SKAO) has announced that France has become the international organisation’s fourteenth member. French President Emmanuel Macron signed the documents of accession in March, and the country’s membership has now come into effect. With the accession of France, the membership of the SKAO has increased by 100% since it came into being, in 2021. “After many years of contributing to the SKA project, it is a great pleasure to welcome France as a member of the Observatory,” highlighted SKAO Council chair Dr Filippo Zerbi. “As well as a national legacy of excellence in astronomy across centuries, French institutions’ expertise in supercomputing for big science makes France an invaluable partner as the SKAO progresses towards early science operations in the coming months.”

The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), an entity of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), is entering a new stage for the agency, TIA 2.0, to position the agency at the forefront of innovation and drive economic growth and sustainable development. Speaking at a media engagement, in Sandton, on June 2, TIA chairperson Loyiso Tyira explained that this was a completely new way of working for the agency, differing from TIA 1.0, by adopting a systems-based approach and a quadruple helix model of innovation, which was cognisant of the fact that a working innovation system required an all-of-society method.

Africa’s future participation in the space economy will also depend on its legal and regulatory frameworks, highlighted Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) chief director of space affairs Nomfuneko Majaja. She was addressing the seventeenth African Regional Round of the Manfred Luchs Space Law Moot Court Competition (of which she was the African regional coordinator) at the Casa Toscana Convention Centre, in Pretoria. “Africa’s future in outer space governance will not only depend on technology and infrastructure, but equally on strong legal minds, sound policy frameworks, international cooperation and visionary leadership,” she said. “This competition therefore represents far more than a legal exercise. It is an investment in Africa’s future leadership, diplomacy, innovation, governance, and sustainable development within the global space arena.”

Solly Malatsi briefed a parliamentary committee on Tuesday after pulling the earlier draft. The target publication date for public comment is January 2027, according to Jeanette Morwane, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies acting deputy director-general.
South Africa’s education system has no shortage of policy ambition. It has strategies, data systems, institutional mandates, and a growing national agenda for digital transformation. Much of the system, however, is still fragmented, writes Mark Burke in this latest opinion article. Learner records sit in different databases. Schools, colleges, universities, funding agencies, and qualification authorities collect overlapping information through separate processes. Provinces work with uneven capacity and uneven systems. Some digital tools are improving, but mostly within institutional silos. That is the setting in which Digital Public Infrastructure, or DPI, becomes relevant. The question is whether South Africa can use the current push for digital identity, data exchange, and digital payments to make education services more coherent from school entry to post-school transitions and into work.

South Africa said it’s evacuating researchers at a sub-Antarctic Marion Island base after the Iran war delayed fuel deliveries needed for the operations. The “urgent evacuation of the overwintering team” was ordered after the SA Agulhas II, an icebreaking polar-supply ship, got held up in Cape Town for weeks waiting for the fuel, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, said in a statement. The station requires polar diesel that doesn’t freeze in extreme cold. South Africa blamed the Iran war for the disruption in an earlier statement. The most industrialised nation on the continent has replaced some of the oil products that it imports from the Middle East with US supplies, but the switch has still resulted in disruptions that reverberate as far as the remote base. The SA Agulhas II departed on Thursday to pick up the team and is expected to arrive on May 18. Marion Island is one of three South African bases located in remote areas.

Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has emerged as the dominant framework through which states pursue digital transformation, Mark Burke notes in this opinion article. Proponents describe it as a "societal operating system", functioning through a set of shared, interoperable digital systems built on open standards that enable population-scale service delivery across health, finance, and social protection. The architecture is presented as an "architecture of opportunity" - as open, inclusive, ...

The National Research Foundation (NRF) has highlighted that the global FLUXNET Shuttle data system became fully operational last week, and that the South African Environmental Observation Network (NRF-SAEON) played an important role in its creation and is a significant contributor to it. FLUXNET Shuttle collects flux data from regional networks around the world, in real time, and makes this data available to researchers around the globe. “Flux data is the direct measurement of the exchange of carbon, water, and energy between land and atmosphere from tropical forests to Arctic tundra,” explained the NRF. “It measures turbulent, vertical, and horizontal air movements (“eddies”) to understand how ecosystems such as forests, farms, or water bodies interact with the air, acting as sources or sinks for greenhouse gases.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa said billionaire Elon Musk could use equity-equivalence programmes to meet South Africa’s racial-equity rules and roll out his Starlink internet service locally, pointing to US firms that comply through alternative investments rather than ownership. Mines and telecommunications operators such as Musk’s Starlink are, however, subject to licensing regulations that require 30% ownership by Black citizens, limiting the use of such alternatives. Communications Minister Solly Malatsi of the Democratic Alliance party has proposed extending equity-equivalence structures to the sector, but some lawmakers overseeing the industry in December called for him to withdraw the policy, with Ramaphosa’s African National Congress “deeply concerned” with the plan.

The first crewed mission to the Moon in more than 50 years, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (Nasa’s) Artemis II, successfully launched at 00:35 Thursday, South African time. The Space Launch System (SLS) rocket carrying the Orion spacecraft and its service module lifted off from the Kennedy Space Centre’s Launch Pad 39B, located in the state of Florida. Artemis II is carrying a crew of four: commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. Koch is the first woman, and Glover the first African-American, to head to the Moon, while Hansen is a Canadian (Canadian Space Agency), and so the first non-American on a Moon mission. Wiseman, Glover and Koch are all experienced astronauts, with Koch having accumulated the greatest time in space (just over 328.5 days, which is the women’s record). For Hansen, this is his first space flight.
