A legally-sound substance abuse policy that is communicated and available to company employees, alongside the correct equipment and procedures are paramount in industries and sectors where “presence of mind and clear judgement could be the difference between life or death”, says medical equipment supplier ALCO-Safe MD Rhys Evans. He explains that it is important to have a complete solution to manage substance abuse in the workplace, rather than just using a breathalyser to catch people that have been drinking.

Despite experiencing frequent supply chain disruptions over the last six years, suppliers remain reactive rather than proactive, owing to structural constraints within the value chain, leaving original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) exposed, says management consulting firm Arthur D. Little partner Frank McCleary. A history of optimising for cost and efficiency rather than resilience has resulted in global supply chain fragility, exacerbated by large-scale disruptions.

Decarbonisation and switching to renewable energy can be key drivers of competitiveness as local manufacturers seek to and remain competitive in a changing global landscape and increase capacity utilisation. South African manufacturing has been in a sustained, structural decline over the past three decades, with the sector’s share of GDP decreasing from 23% to 13% currently. The decline is attributable to a combination of international and local factors, including negligible economic growth, weak local demand, insufficient trade protection in some cases, inadequate municipal service delivery, high electricity prices and poor policy alignment.
