Oil prices rose on Tuesday to their highest in four weeks, as the US reimposed a naval blockade of Iran and renewed attacks between Washington and Tehran heightened concerns over energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude futures were up $2.74, or 3.29%, at $86.04 per barrel at 0751 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude rose $2.21, or 2.83%, to $80.35 a barrel.

OPEC on Monday lowered its forecast for world oil demand growth in 2026 to 780 000 barrels per day, a copy of its monthly report showed, marking the third straight downward revision. The producer group continues to see a smaller impact on consumption since the Iran war started than other forecasters such as the International Energy Agency. OPEC said the world economy may do better in the rest of the year and raised its oil demand growth forecast for 2027.

A recent escalation of hostilities between the US and Iran could upend the International Energy Agency's (IEA's) forecast of a significant oil market surplus next year, it said on Friday, as global supply jumped in June when the Strait of Hormuz reopened but still lagged pre-war levels. Global oil markets received some respite last month as a peace agreement between the US and Iran facilitated the opening of the Strait, the effective closure of which had taken out as much as 14-million barrels per day of crude flows during the peak of the largest oil supply crisis in history.

With South Africa’s energy sector at a defining moment, with a dual imperative to ensure energy security and a credible transition to a sustainable low-carbon economy, this requires collaboration and a broader role for professional organisations. This was highlighted by speakers during professional organisation the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers’ (SAIEE’s) Strategic Leadership Dialogue, held in collaboration with State-owned utility Eskom and statutory body the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), at the Eskom Academy of Learning, in Midrand, on July 8.

Airbus, MTU Aero Engines create JV to develop hydrogen fuel cell aircraft engine

Global major aerospace group Airbus and German engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines have announced the creation of a joint venture (JV) focused on the development and commercialisation of a fully electric hydrogen fuel cell engine. This is an outcome of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies at the 2025 Paris Air Show. The agreement is non-binding and is subject to the standard European and national regulatory approvals and social processes. The JV is expected to commence operations next year. Hydrogen has the potential to greatly reduce aviation’s climate impact over the long term. It could transform aviation in a manner analogous to the impact of electric vehicles on road transport. In aviation, hydrogen fuel cells would produce electricity which would power electric motors that would drive aircraft propellors.
