A Free State commercial farming operation Belle Rive, spanning more than 2 000 ha, has appointed solar energy company RenEnergy Africa as its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor to design and deliver what will become one of South Africa’s largest offgrid agricultural solar-plus-storage systems. The installation – a ground-mounted 4.89 MW solar PV array paired with a 20 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) – is under construction. Once complete, the system will distribute power across the farming site through about 17 km of medium-voltage (MV) reticulation.

Virtual power plants (VPPs) have been tested and are being proven in South Africa, and their widespread use could reduce the need to build some new transmission and distribution infrastructure while ensuring that the network is stable and reliable. These plants could defer some grid capital expenditure by providing energy services in a localised area, thereby reducing congestion on the grid, climate and energy strategy advisory firm Meridian Economics climate, policy and energy analyst Nic van Doesburgh has said.

With South Africa’s energy sector at a defining moment, with a dual imperative to ensure energy security and a credible transition to a sustainable low-carbon economy, this requires collaboration and a broader role for professional organisations. This was highlighted by speakers during professional organisation the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers’ (SAIEE’s) Strategic Leadership Dialogue, held in collaboration with State-owned utility Eskom and statutory body the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), at the Eskom Academy of Learning, in Midrand, on July 8.
