Europe-based global major aerospace group Airbus has announced the successful first flight of the world’s longest-ranged airliner, the A350-1000ULR. This has been developed at the specific request of Australian flag-carrier Qantas, which has ordered 12 of the type. The airline will use the A350-1000ULR for unprecedented non-stop flights between Sydney and London, a distance of nearly 10 000 nautical miles (nm). Flight times will be up to 22 hours. This ultra-long-range capability has been achieved by integrating another rear centre fuel tank into the airframe. This has increased the range by 1 000 nm.

Partnerships, of various types and at different levels, would be a way of gaining access to markets, funding, innovation and technology. The different levels could be government to government, company to company, business division to business division, all the way down to the project/capability level. Strategic partnerships could take the form of joint ventures (JVs), contracting partnerships, marketing agreements, “smart partnerships” and public-private partnerships (PPPs).
Drones are transitioning from specialised outsourced tools into core operational infrastructure, driven by lower drone costs, technology advances and the emergence of autonomous, dock-based drone networks that no longer require a physical onsite operator, says drone distributor GoUAV MD Philip Smerkovitz. When drones were initially introduced to the market, end-users had to rely on a limited number of licensed service providers, who often lacked the skills required for specialised applications. This, alongside the high costs associated with outsourced operators and the complexity of managing drones in house, led to the slow uptake, he explains.

South Africa launches inquiry into Iran's participation in BRICS+ naval drills

South Africa's defence ministry has launched a probe into Iran's participation in the BRICS+ naval exercises held near Cape Town this week, after reports that President Cyril Ramaphosa had asked Iran to withdraw to avoid antagonising the United States. There has been confusion over the past week over Iran's role in the drills, which also included Russia and China. A Reuters witness saw three Iranian ships in the False Bay area every day with the other vessels, but the defence ministry has not clarified what they were doing. South African news outlets Daily Maverick and News24 reported that Ramaphosa had ordered Iran to be withdrawn from the exercises due to concerns about the damage its participation could do to South Africa's shaky relationship with Washington. The inquiry will seek to determine whether Ramaphosa's instructions were misrepresented and/or ignored, the defence ministry said in a statement on Friday.

The US criticised South Africa for allowing Iran to participate in naval drills off the coast of Cape Town, after conflicting reports about the Islamic Republic’s involvement in the exercises. Iran’s “inclusion in joint exercises – in any capacity – undermines maritime security and regional stability,” the US Embassy said in a post on X Thursday night. “South Africa can’t lecture the world on justice while cosying up to Iran.” Warships from some members of the BRICS group of developing nations, including Iran, Russia and China, arrived in South African waters last week for a naval exercise that continued until Friday.

The Democratic Alliance has expressed concerns that South Africa is deepening ties with Russia and Iran, following recent naval exercises involving Brics+ countries, in Cape Town. According to the Department of Defence, the drill forms part of a China-led joint, inter-agency, inter-departmental, multinational exercise that is being hosted in South Africa between January 9 and 16, under the theme ‘Joint Actions to Ensure the Safety of Shipping and Maritime Economic Activities’. However, the DA is less than convinced that they are multinational exercises, calling it “deliberately misleading” and pointing out that Brics is not a military alliance. DA Spokesperson on Defence and Military Veterans Chris Hattingh said the bloc has no defence role or shared military plans to warrant such exercises.
