Across the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), extreme heat is rapidly increasing and becoming the most urgent climate and health risk across the region. This is the conclusion of a new consensus study, just released by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), and entitled 'Climate Change and Extreme Heat: Strengthening Resilience and Adaptive Capacity in the Southern African Development Community'. “Extreme heat is no longer a distant projection; it is already reshaping the lived realities of millions of people across Southern Africa,” stressed study-leading Expert Panel chairperson Professor Jerome Amir Singh. “This report highlights the urgency of strengthening heat-health preparedness and provides clear, evidence-based pathways for governments and communities to respond.”

As African countries respond to global pressure to transition to renewable energy while also addressing urgent development and energy needs, the focus should not be on moving away from coal, but rather on decarbonising its industrial use, says University of the Witwatersrand chemical and metallurgical engineering senior lecturer Dr Nandi Malumbazo. The global decarbonisation agenda should extend beyond the power sector, as all industrial sectors reliant on carbon-based raw materials face similar pressures. African governments, she adds, must carefully consider whether and how their economies can afford such a transition.

There are credible reports that Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramakgopa is working on a proposal to suspend the carbon tax, and that National Treasury has been asked to motivate why the tax should be retained.

Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from 66 international organisations, including the UNFCCC, the 1992 treaty that underpins all global climate cooperation, and the global scientific authority Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Trump claimed that these organisations promote “radical climate policies” and global governance that “no longer serve American interests.”
